EcoFlow Smart Generator: Test and Review
Welcome to our in-depth test and review of the EcoFlow Smart Generator. Below, we’ve provided a detailed breakdown of all the tests we conducted.
Please note, we purchased the unit ourselves, and this review is based solely on our hands-on experience.
Decibel Levels
Measured noise levels during startup, operation, and charging.
Device Connectivity Tests
Connected the EcoFlow Smart Generator to the Delta 2 and Delta 2 Max via the extra battery port.
Tested the EcoFlow PowerStream with the Delta 2 while connecting the Smart Generator to the remaining battery port.
Connected the EcoFlow River Pro and Delta Mini via the AC port.
Powerstream Test
Tested the EcoFlow PowerStream and Smart generator both connected to the Delta 2 Max
Fuel Consumption
Monitored fuel usage and compared the costs of Aspen 4 versus regular unleaded fuel.
Startup Options
Tested the generator using the integrated start button, pull cord, and EcoFlow app.
Smart Auto-Start/Stop Functionality
Configured and tested the auto-start and stop feature, triggered by the battery levels of connected devices.
Decibel Levels
Noise Ratings and Sticker
Peak Noise Level: A sticker on the top of the device indicates a peak noise level of 96 dB.
Ambient Sound
Level: 41 dB, capturing light road noise and the sound of a dog walking nearby.
Sound Levels During Operation
Startup and Running Noise: Recorded at 75.2 dB—noticeable but not overly disruptive in an outdoor setting.
Performance Mode: Increased to 78.5 dB during normal operation.
Charging Mode: When the generator automatically switched to performance mode to charge an EcoFlow unit, the noise level peaked at 84 dB.

Charging EcoFlow Devices
The Smart Generator charging a variety of EcoFlow devices:
Delta 2, Delta 2 Max, and Delta Pro: Charging is done via the extra battery port.
EcoFlow River 2 Pro and Delta Mini: These devices are charged using the AC port.
Auto Charging with the Extra Battery Port
Charging via the extra battery port works seamlessly. Both the Delta 2 and Delta 2 Max were charged using the supplied cable, and it should also work for the Delta Pro, although you would need to purchase a separate cable converter for that model.
Smart Generator Auto Start/Stop Feature
You can set the auto start and stop thresholds within the app, this worked for both the Delta 2 and Delta 2 Max and i’m sure would be the same for the Delta Pro, with a range from 30% to 80%.
When the AC is off: The generator will turn off completely and restart when the extra battery port is in use, depending on your settings.
When the AC is on: The auto start/stop feature will manage the charging of the extra battery but will not turn off the generator entirely.
Powerstream Test
For this test, I connected the EcoFlow Smart Generator to one of the battery ports on the EcoFlow Delta 2 Max and the EcoFlow Powerstream to the other. This setup worked remarkably well. I set the Powerstream demand to the full 800W, and without any solar input, it reached a maximum output of 623W.
Things got interesting when I configured the Smart Generator’s auto start/stop range between 0% and 95%. As the Powerstream supplied 623W to the house from the main battery, the generator automatically turned on whenever the Delta 2 Max battery dropped below 96%. Once the battery reached 96%, the generator would turn off.
Fuel Consumption and Cost to Run
During our fuel consumption test:
We began with 1.24 liters of fuel, which was 31% of the 4-liter tank.
By 11:16, the fuel level increased, and by 11:35, it had dropped to 26%, reflecting a 5 percentage point decrease.
With a 4-liter tank, this means approximately 0.2 liters (5% of 4 liters) were consumed during this period while running at around 1800W, though not constantly at that level.
We used Aspen 4 fuel, which we don’t plan to use the Smart Generator frequently, as the generator is more of a backup. Aspen 4 is chosen for its longer lifespan and longer shelf life (4-5 years), compared to regular pump unleaded fuel, which deteriorates after just 1-2 months.
In terms of cost, we paid £24.50 for 5 liters of Aspen 4, which works out to about £4.90 per liter. In comparison, super unleaded fuel is available locally for £1.59 per liter.
If I were using the generator regularly, I’d definitely opt for super unleaded, especially considering the generator’s initial cost of £296. In fact, with the money saved by using super unleaded instead of Aspen 4, I could buy a second generator after 89 uses.
EcoFlow Smart Generator – Noise Level Test videos
Final Thoughts
After testing the EcoFlow Smart Generator, it’s clear that it is a reliable backup power solution for EcoFlow devices, particularly in outdoor or off-grid environments. However, the noise levels range from 75.2 dB during startup to a peak of 96 dB in performance mode, which I believe is on the medium to high side and could potentially be disruptive in quieter areas.
In terms of fuel consumption, we observed 0.2 liters of fuel used during testing with Aspen 4, running at about 1800W (though not constantly at that level). Aspen 4 offers a long shelf life and better durability compared to regular unleaded fuel, making it a good option for occasional use. However, it’s fairly expensive at £4.90 per liter. For more frequent use, switching to super unleaded would be a more cost-effective choice, significantly lowering running costs. In fact, the money saved by using super unleaded could potentially cover the cost of a second generator.
The auto start/stop feature is convenient, allowing the generator to automatically engage and disengage based on your set percentage thresholds. However, there are some quirks, such as the generator not turning off automatically when connected to the AC port to charge the Delta Mini.
Overall, if you're looking for a reliable and easy-to-use backup generator for charging EcoFlow devices, the EcoFlow Smart Generator offers solid performance, though its noise levels and fuel costs may be a consideration depending on your usage scenario.
